- At first glance, the line outside might seem daunting for the hangry. Luckily, it moves quick & the food inside is worth every waiting minute. Try the bistec sandwich washed down with a Te Helado.
- Mike WinstonSeptember 29, 2014Get your fill of hearty platters of Puerto Rican meats, rice, & beans at Sol Food in sunny San Rafael. Use the spicy & vinegary Pique hot sauce liberally and read about it on WinstonWanders below!! Read moreUpvoted Mar 18
- Black SequoiaApril 10, 2017Had the Kan Kan special...amazing!!! Order extra platanos. Everything here is phenomenal...not to be outdone by the warm, generous, magnanimous service! Felt like home 😄😊😍
- California GirlAugust 8, 2016The vibe is great here, full of locals, large servings and happy people. Service is great, but you must first order and pay at the register. Prepare to stand in line. No res. #cglifestyle
- Kylie FJune 7, 2015Oh god, even the plain rice is amazing!!!! The hot sauce in the table is runny but spicy and oh so tasty. Big line out front but moves fast & worth the wait
- JKAugust 4, 2021Try tamale-like pasteles of mashed plantain and taro stuffed with garlicky pork to fragrant sautéed shrimp loaded with tomato, onion and spices & arroz con pollo and pernil
- Kathleen O'HoraSeptember 19, 2017Food + atmosphere + price is great! Whatever you get, make sure you get a side of either fried plantains or plantain chips!
- LisaOctober 26, 2014Love love this place! You line up and order food at the counter. I LOVE the té helado (orange-mango tea), must get! I like the bistec better than pollo al horno.
- Chris GuestJuly 8, 2016Surprisingly good for food allergies! They use rice oil in the fryers, have several gluten free entrees and offer sandwiches between fried plantains instead of bread!
- Benjy WeinbergerJuly 5, 2015If the line is long get your delicious food from the to go counter, and eat in the delightful little seating area in the nearby parking lot.
- California GirlAugust 7, 2017I tried the #ribs this time that are on a bed of rice, served with black beans, salad and fried #plantain. loved it! #californiagirl
- Taylor LeeSeptember 21, 2018The Sandwich Bistec is one of my go-to orders. Make sure to get extra hot sauce, too. Order online and pick it up from their to-go shop in order to save some time!
- Joe Murphy LibrarianOctober 12, 2014Vegan plate is delicious (rice & beans with olives, sweet and savory tostones) Some of the best tostones and love their hot sauce.
- Ariana FaustiniOctober 11, 2014Most locals know about Sol Food. Absolutely authentic, fresh, and delicious. The drinks are refreshing, and the is food extremely satisfying. If you enjoy long lines, you're in luck.
- Mark BrowneDecember 30, 2015The restaurant line was long. We ordered takeout next door at their to-go location. The food was delicious, particularly the mango bread pudding.
- Mohit SAugust 19, 2014The bistec sandwich. That's what you came here for. Juicy, tasty, perfect. Btw there are three Sol Foods in a two block radius, so check the other ones if the line is too long.
- If you don't mind the smaller quarters, try their 4th street location right around the block. Skip the long lines and eat in micro authentic Puerto Rican style. Excellent service to boot!
- Mike CMarch 24, 2013After a day of hiking at Point Reyes, this is one of the best places to stop by on the way back to San Francisco. Table service is 20-40 min. during peak hrs., but they do a quick takeout! Eat in car!
- FoodspottingDecember 12, 2010The plates here are good, but the sandwiches are even better. What started as a farmer’s market booth now has 2 locations near each other in San Rafael, the “big place” and the “small place.” - Jeremy
- Smashed plantains are awesome, especially with something saucy to balance the dryness. Absolutely delicious food, tho not spicy. The coconut latte was spech.
- Taylor BeggsOctober 5, 2013I featured Sol Food on my latest blog post: Taylor’s Best of Marin: Top 10 Must Eat Meals Before You Die! See what meal was my favorite & feel free to comment and let me know if you agree or disagree! Read more
- instead of getting the vegetarian combo, get a side of rice, side of beans, and side salad. you get twice the amount of food for the same cost! also get it for there they skimp on to go meals.
- Olivier P.September 28, 2012Tiny restaurant that seems always packed. The food is great and for drink, you should get the lemonade. You can buy their amazing hot-sauce next door. (3 of 4 petals via Fondu) Read more
- Try the Mango Limeade Ice Tea - This popular drink isn't specifically on the menu, because it's a combination of two drinks. It's amazsome! (via @Foodspotting)
- MarkApril 17, 2014I had a large bistec combo, it was great. After adding the hot sauce, it was like crack. Mango iced tea to cool me down. This place is delicious.
- Ben RudnickMarch 3, 2016Worth the wait. Make sure to douse your food in their special sauce at the table. Incredible salad dressing, take a bottle home!
- Cate M. ZhangAugust 7, 2014The beef over rice lunch special is pretty great! Cubano and the veggie sandwiches are the best! Don't forget the hot sauce they made in house.
- Such good iced tea and well priced meals. The plantains are always on point especially with black beans and rice
- Try the bistec sandwich - So Perfect! Steak, avacado, and all that saucy grilled oniony flavagoodness that melds all together. (via @Foodspotting)
- Brendan AronoffJuly 2, 2010Excellent food, and definitely one of the best restaurants open late (til midnight) in the north bay. Only problem is they have a somewhat limited vegetarian menu. The shrimp is awesome.
- cyn kApril 2, 2013the chicken salad is amazing. the small has one piece, the large has two pieces. they have multiple locations too, so if one's too crowded, check out the others.
- RenoSeptember 16, 2011One of my favorites - can't get healthy, tasty and organic puerto rican chicken anywhere like this - always packed - try the pollo al horno with sweet plantains and mago ice tea. crave.
- This is "the place to eat" in Marin right now - day or night! Pick-up and eat-in. Great flat steaks, grilled onions, plantains - yum! Read more
- Alex DobyanNovember 29, 2017I love that there's a spot holding it down for Puerto Rican food in the Bay, but my lofty expectations weren't met. A bit too greasy (to be expected, tbf) and chuleton sandwich was on the small side.
- The hot sauce is incredible! Amazing food and great atmosphere. Would definitely go out of my way to come here if I'm in Marin.
- Anna BalanvskaJune 20, 2017Sol food is amazing. Bistek sandwich and garlic tostones are my favorite. Mango smoothie is worth to try as well
- Linh NguyenAugust 13, 2014Everything, especially the limeade. I usually order whatever's on special as these are changed daily.
- Carissa BilinskiMay 6, 2013Pollo al horno. I don't care if you hate chicken normally, you MUST order this. Make sure to pair it with their homemade limeade and douse your food with the vinegar sauce.
- Amy MatsunoOctober 13, 2013The sweet plaintains here are better than the ones I had IN Puerto Rico! Perfectly ripe and sweet with a hint of crisp around the edges.
- Bryan NeubergJanuary 27, 2011Honestly, I don't know how they do it. Line constantly out the door. Puerto Ricueno delights: sweet plantains, best chicken I've had, and the sauce... the sauce! All for $12/ person. W/ friendly staff
- J. MontesJanuary 26, 2013This place definitely lives up to the hype. This coming from someone who knows her PR cuisine ~ bistec sandwiches, frijoles negros, tostones y maduros! Delicioso!
- Don't bother standing in the long line next door. Place your order to go at the bodega and hit the road! I recommend the Arnold Palmer Puerto Rican style. Half limeade half mango ice tea. Yum!
- Christy MessinaFebruary 19, 2014Presidents Day was not the long lines that we expected, everything was so delish, Thans to my daughter & Son in Law for treating me, for my birthday lunch here :) we tried it all.
- John DavisonAugust 7, 2014If you've never tried it but you're put off by the huge lines, call and get them to deliver. You'll understand what all the fuss is about. Great food, dirt cheap
- Anne RMarch 18, 2017Everything is good here! Great for allergies. I had no problem (no gluten, dairy, corn, red chilies)
- Jeff WeinsteinDecember 27, 2016Chicken thighs, rice, beans, both kinds of plantains. Salad dressing is light and acidic, pairs well. Giant fruit lemonade. Try a soup.
- Sarah SterlingOctober 5, 2017Anything here is good really but always love their plátanos and black beans with roasted chicken and salad
- Ixchel MayorgaMarch 13, 2015Pollo al horno with sweet plantains! Haven't had the garlic ones but the sweet ones are like a nice little dessert
