The loveliest bookstore in SF. The gems are in the nooks and crannies. Very extensive non-fiction section with place to sit downstairs.
In 1956 founder Lawrence Ferlinghetti published Alan Ginsberg's beatnik classic poem "Howl", and faced obscenity charges for it. In a landmark ruling, the poem was protected by the First Amendment.
City Lights isn't so much 'stocked' as 'curated'. For its size this has to be the best independent bookshop in the world. When you're finished buying go next door to Vesuvio and get drunk.
Cozy bookstore within walking distance from Glen Park BART station. Live music and you can contribute a small donation to the musicians if you enjoy the show. Really great people and atmosphere.

I wish more spaces like this existed. Great book store with an incredible selection of cookbooks and other treasures, including chef/author talks.

The best bookstore for kids in a 20 mile radius, hands down. Charlotte is the best and loves kids so much. Story time is a huge treat for the whole community.

Smallish bookstore with a decent selection of titles! Found a great softcover version of Lord of the Flies there. Get on the waitlist for the French restaurant next door then come back to kill time.
